I've read the entries in this forum that tell me foreigners can't own land but I'll ask this question anyway because judging by the amount of foreigners there, there must be a way.
I'm interested in buying a house and living with my girlfriend in Cebu. I know I can just buy it in her name but I'm not prepared to do that yet. I want to retain ownership just in case the relationship doesn't work out. I read about setting up a corporation but I'm also not prepared to give away 60% of the house to someone else. One way I've heard is to buy it through a corporation and loan the corporation 100% of the purchase price, in other words, the property is mortgaged to you. Is this feasible? Anyone done this? Is there any other way to buy a house and retain ownership?

As some of you know, I was in the hospital last October-November and consequently missed my booked and paid for flight with KLM to Manila. Obviously, also the connecting flight with Cebu Pacific.
Now, KLM has issued us new tickets and we fly out February 11, be in Manila Feb 12. We most likely can still use our fully paid Cebu Pacific tickets to CDO, but it would be nice to be able to phone them in advance with our reservation code. We got a phone number, as follows: 02-852-23-28. They welcome you with jingles and bells, let you wait 10 minutes and then we get the busy signal.< I cannot call a call center from Spain: it has to be a regular phone number. Please try to get a possible number to me today, wednesday. BTW, naturally I already phoned information and they only had the above number. Thanks a million, Bob

A neighbor has recently got a very cute Beagle puppy for their 2 young sons as a pet. Yesterday the puppy bit one of them & they are now worried about rabies as the puppy has not yet had all its shots. (this is how 90% of kids who get rabies, die)
This made me think. I have not seen much info or discussions on the many forums & groups I am a member of. So I have created this page: http://retirephilippines.wetpaint.com/page/RABIES+-+The+Philippine+Situation In the hope that this DOES get discussed more & that we, as responsible people, help spread the info. SAN FRANCISCO – A Filipino designer is on top of the pack of the new season of the hit reality television show, “Project Runway”.
Jay Sario, 31, is the first Philippine-born designer to ever make it to the show. Sario said representing Filipinos was his goal when he auditioned for Season 7 of the popular reality show. “I'm proud to be able to represent and be part of history. I am history!” Sario said.Born and raised in Laoag, Ilocos Norte. He and his family moved to the US when he was 17. He developed his design skills at the Honolulu Community College and the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Sario said when he found out he made it to Project Runway, he was more than ready. “The very first time I saw all 15 other designers I said to myself, ‘This is it! Bring it on!’" he said. On the second episode, Sario won over other contestants when he created a little black dress out of burlap --- a fabric used as potato sacks. “They're just amazed about the fact that I made burlap look like feathers and that kind of sold it," he said. Sario gives his impression of Project Runway's host, supermodel Heidi Klum. “She's just gorgeous. She doesn't have to do so much to look good," he said. As for the contestants' mentor, fashion consultant Tim Gunn, Sario said, “I adore him. I respect his feedback." "To be able to see myself grow from the day I tried out for the show, and now...it's insane," said the Pinoy designer. Whether he wins the coveted Project Runway title or not, Sario says he knows he will make it big as a designer. "I need to find ways to accomplish this dream of mine. This is what I want to do. This is my calling," said Sario, who plans to launch his own line both in the US and the Philippines. Balitang America http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/pinoy-migration/02/05/10/ |

Considering the horrendous damage resulting from the Haiti earthquake, and similarities between their buildings and the Philippines, I thought it was a good idea to consider the earthquake preparedness of our future house. One thing which stood out, though, when looking at those pictures of the damage done to the buildings in Haiti, was that there was very little in the way of rebar used. Did any of you guys notice this?
Focusing on the quality and volume of the cement is to my mind kind of pointless, as it has great compressive strength qualities, but it's horribly inelastic. So cement in itself is not going to provide any real significant structural strength should the build start swaying from side to side (as proven by the Haiti disaster). Steel doesn't have great compressive qualities, but is highly elastic by comparison to cement. Rebar is good for walls, in that it can provide a mesh to prevent the walls from crumbling. But where rebar really is critical, is in the columns and quality of their attachment to the footings. So the vertical rebar in the Colums should be bent and flare out horizontally by a decent length into the footings. I can't remember, but I think the standard for most columns (depending on the load) is 12mm? So I was thinking to go to 16mm for the verticals, instead of 12mm. Or if the rebar is 16mm, go to 20mm. Another weak link are the windows. A lot of people like to use aluminium windows, but I'm going with seel and have the rebar in the wall welded to the frame. I guess you could achieve something comparable by starting with a steel frame (weld to the rebar), and then place the aluminium window frame inside the steel frame? Well that's may uneducated rambling; what do you guys think? Andrew

For us Brits - why the exchange has fallen this week:
The pound fell sharply on Monday on the back of weak housing data, despite the strongest figures from the manufacturing sector in 15 years. Sterling closed down by more than a cent against the dollar at $1.5903, its lowest level since October 13, after Bank of England figures showed a surprise fall in mortgage approvals for new house purchases in December. It was the first drop in mortgage approvals in a year. The number of mortgage approvals fell to 59,000 from 60,000, reinforcing doubts that the pick-up in housing market through the second half of 2009 will be sustained. The pound was also down almost a cent against the euro, closing at €1.1525, despite a 15-year high for the manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI), which combines production, orders and employment. The PMI rose to 56.7 in January from 54.6 in December, where anything above 50 indicates an expansion in activity. It was the highest reading since October 1994, and much stronger than the 53.9 forecast by economists. Michael Saunders, economist at Citigroup, said the latest PMI suggested that "UK manufacturing output is now recovering sharply" There was an increase in employment in the manufacturing sector for the first time in 21 months, reaching 50.9 on the PMI from 48.3. "Although the manufacturing sector represents a smaller proportion of total UK GDP than 10 or 20 years ago, it is still a very important part of the economy. It is therefore encouraging to see such strong growth," said David Noble, chief executive at CIPS. "It suggests we are coming out of recession much quicker than previously feared. Employment is usually a lagging indicator so it suggests that firms are becoming much more confident about the future." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/7131124/Pound-falls-on-poor-UK-home-loan-figures.html |

VERSION 1 from http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/philippines
A British man has been accused of running over and killing two teenagers in the Philippines after they ambushed him with a gun. Police in the Philippines said that retired banker Frank Bell, 60, ran over the teenagers on the island of Cebu. One of the teenagers was alleged to be known to Mr Bell's 28-year-old Filipina wife Juriza. In a statement made to Cebu Provincial Police, Mr Bell, from Manchester, said he was driving with his wife and their four-year-old daughter Savanna when he was overtaken by the youths on a motorcycle and shot at several times. The youths also rode on ahead, it was alleged, parked up, and fired several more shots as he approached. "According to Bell, he hit the motorcycle where the gunman and the minor were, and they were flung to the side of the road," said Senior Police Supt. Erson Digal. The victims, Borja and Harold Flores, aged 17 and 19, were both Philippine nationals. Police Superintendent Rudolfo Albotra said: "Mr Bell said he ran the boys over in self defence. "Tests have been done on his hands to check for gun powder residue. We need to rule out the possibility that he fired the shots himself." At the Citylights Garden Condominium a management official said Mr Bell had been resident in Cebu for two years and was previously living in Manila, after working as a banker in Hong Kong. Uzi

Hi Andrew,
Should be a nice size house when it's done, with practical layout. Not so different from ours. Just a couple of questions though. You said "I’m estimating the total cost of the project will come in at P1.5 to P2 million, including wall. " - I take it that's EXCLUDING the land? The land cost seems quite high in proportion but if your price for the project ends up at P3 million, then that is VERY good. As for the shared electricity & one bill. I take it you are prepared to foot that cost as I could see some issues arising over who used what. Uzi.

Hi all,
Thought I'd do a quick introduction. My name is Andrew, I'm 46 and have been married to a 38 yo Filipina for 11 years, and we have two kids. We currently live in Sydney, but are intending on moving to Silay (10 klm from Bacolod) in a couple of years. I've actually lived there before with my wife (we had our first child there) eight years ago. I made the mistake of basically "liquidating" my life here in Aus just after we married...I was 35 and I quit my job, sold everything I owned and went to live in "paradise" with $60k to my name; ) We started off renting an apartment in Bacolod. Six months after arriving, we bought some land in Talisay, just outside Bacolod and built a house. Thought I'd start a business there (taxis)...how hard could it be? Of course the taxi business didn't go too well as time passed. What made me stop this little enterprise in the end, was the huge risks to do with personal liability. We were running a long distance FX service between Bacolod and around the top of Negros to San Carlos. These drivers drove like mad men. One little incident involve our driver running off the road and into a ditch at a 140 km/s! This was with ten people on board! Well we live and learn. So we are now much closer financially to be able to finally move back there without having to rely on a business there. Our plans are to move to Silay City close to my wife's relatives (whom I get on really well with).

Cebu ranked no. 4 among Asian island destinations, according to Travel + Leisure magazine, which recently released the results of its World’s Best Awards 2009, a listing of the best hotels, airlines, cruises in islands and cities all over the world.
No other Philippine city, island, resort, hotel, or airline made it to the listing in other categories. The awards are based on the American magazine’s 14th Readers’ Poll survey conducted from mid-January to the end of March this year. “An unprecedented number of new names and places made their debuts on this year’s list, sometimes unseating longtime favorites,” says Travel + Leisure editor in chief Nancy Novogrod. Cebu got a rating of 79.68 points. It ranked behind Bali (87.41), Maldives (84.43), and Ph,uket (80.93). Respondents were asked to rate the islands based on natural attractions, activities and sights, restaurant and food, people and value. They had to rate a candidate on a scale of 1 to 5 where “1” means poor and “5” means excellent. http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/breakingnews/view/20090831-222860/Cebu-is-4th-best-island-in-A

I expect that some of you guys at one time or another have had the same problem with your wife that I have. Janet is so taken up with her studies and research, that she misses other things. I installed a water heater about 8 months ago, one of those instant heat types.
We don't use it often, but the mornings that Janet gets up at 5.30 am and has to leave for Uni. early, then she uses it. I have found that 5 times, over a period of the last couple of months, that when I come home from driving her to Uni, that the heater is still on. One morning it was registering 78deg. and no water going thru' it. My question is, for you electronic types, is there some warning device that I could fit to it to warn her that after she has turned off the water, the heater is still turned on?? Like a pressure switch in the water line, attached to a bright red light or a siren!!! I am leaving to return to OZ for 3 weeks in March and am worried that I will return to a house that looks like crisp toast. I had thought of disconnecting the wires inside the plug to the heater, but that seems a bit cruel. But I will do it if necessary. Graham

Australia does not have bears, like some other countries. But if you were in the presence of Janet anytime in the last few days then you would full well understand the terminology. Started out with a headache, no paracetamol could shake it. Then came body malaise
No matter that I offered sympathy, every suggestion was met with a snarl. Couldn't work it out, so I gave up and retreated into a sulk. Then magically, on Saturday, the solution to the anger became clear with sores all over her body and face. Yaaaa, Chicken Pox. The poor little bugger has really suffered, she also has sores inside her mouth, which makes talking difficult. (a blessing??) I have just finished applying Calomine Lotion to try and stop the itch. I take her swimming twice a day to try and help. A lot of the sores have dried up, but she is still sensitive when touched, makes for fun when she accidentally rolls against me of a night in the bed. She did some research on the comp and found out it can be alleviated by some tablets. We raced out and purchased them and it seems to have slowed down the amount of sores appearing. We are off to the Drs. at 1pm so she can be checked out. We had contacted him by cell but Janet has been too sick to go and see him. He did agree with the tablets that she bought. I believe this affliction lasts for about 2 weeks. Goodness knows how she will catch up with her studies. She has to get a note from the Dr. for her Uni. to satisfy them that she is/was really sick. Just like a naughty schoolkid in junior college! Graham

The "Pork Barrel Fund" is something that has intrigued me for many years. At first I thought (innocently) that it was about extra money for the farmers. Then I realized it was some sort of legal diversion of funds to the tills of the senators and congressmen. Now I see in PhilStar that the new trillion-pesos budget is "laden with pork". Now, friends who are wiser than I, what exactly does this pork business mean? I think it wold interest more ignoramusses among us. Bob
